Curriculum Trainings

Curriculum trainings are offered on a variety of standards- and research-based curricula. The goal of these trainings is to familiarize teachers with the curriculum and educational strategies so that they can begin implementing with confidence. Curriculum topics include Nutrition & Healthy Eating, Alcohol, Tobacco & other Drug Prevention, Safe and Drug Free Schools, Sexual Health Promotion, Fire Awareness, Injury Prevention, Comprehensive Health Education Curricula Programs and more!

Length: 1 - 2 Days

All curriculum trainings include the following components:

  • Effective Practices in Health Education
  • Curriculum Overview
  • Teach-backs of Lessons within Curriculum Program
  • Answering Difficult Questions in the Classroom
  • Alignment to Oregon Health Education Content Standards
  • Implementation Barriers and Supports

Sexual Health Curricula Training

March 15: Tigard

This two-day training will provide an overview of effective practices in health eduaction and a deep dive into several evidence-based sexual health curricula including Making a Difference, Making Proud Choices, Safer Choices and FLASH.

This training is open to Tigard/Tualatin School District staff only. Other WISE grantees may attend by arrangement. Contact Maesie Speer at maesie@hklb.org for registration or more information.

Using Health Education Standards and Assessment in the Classroom

This is a national standards and assessment training program based on current pedagogical research. The 14-hour interactive training has been adapted to the Oregons Health Education Standards (OHES).

Length: 2 Days

During the training, participants will:

  • Become familiar with the Oregon Health Education Standards (OHES)
  • Identify effective Health Education teaching practices
  • Receive tools and strategies that are aligned with the OHES
  • Practice scoring student work using scoring guides for health education
  • Develop performance assessments to gauge student learning
  • Develop a standards-based classroom unit plan

District Mapping and Alignment: K-12 school district training for scope and sequence

This training brings a district through a process in which participants use effective practices in health education, local student data, the policies around health education and Oregon's grade level maps to determine their district scope and sequence. Once the scope and sequence are established, curriculum programs are selected through the next process.

Length: 1 Day

During the training, participants will:

  • Review effective practices in health education
  • Review the Oregon Health Education Standards (OHES)
  • Become familiar with laws and policies related to health curriculum and instruction
  • Review local or county data from Oregon Healthy Teens Survey and other sources
  • Develop an scope and sequence for your K-12 grades

Best Practices and Emerging Issues in Health Education Part 2

February 23 & 24, 2011: Bend Park and Recreation District

In this special two-day training (part of a series for Deschutes County school districts), participants will develop their scope and sequence and also review and select curricula using the Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT).
